An Idea Who's Time Has Come
Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA's; are usually a single farm that has a membership that supports it by monthly dues and shares in the products that the farm produces.
The COAPA CSA is much different. We are an association of small farms and ranches in Northern Ca and Southern OR. As more and more mega-farms and mono agricultural producers invade this country; and more and more stores purchase products from out-sourced farms and ranches we are seeing several things happening.
1. Small family farms are struggling to survive; many are forced to sell out to the mega farms or to investors that turn their prime agricultural lands into houses and strip malls.
2. As American consumers get used to paying higher and higher prices for the agricultural products they consume, they are lulled into thinking these products are locally produced when in fact more and more of our products are coming from other nations which do NOT hold to our high standards of production and ecologically friendly farming and ranching techniques. In fact, we are seeing many "organic" products coming from other nations where no organic standards or oversight is maintained.
3. Many of our politicians are mistakenly lulled into thinking that agriculture is NO LONGER NEEDED IN AMERICA!
4. We are seeing poisoned products come into our country's food production chain with no consequences on the countries that produced them. For example, pet food companies are still purchasing the majority of their added ingredients from CHINA!
5. MOST AMERICANS JUST LIKE YOU WANT TO PURCHASE FROM LOCAL FARMS AND RANCHES THEY CAN VISIT AND SEE HOW THEIR FOOD IS PRODUCED.
The Cal Ore Agricultural Producers Association is owned and run by the farmers and ranchers themselves.
We propose to build a small local facility in Siskiyou County that will house several certified organic kitchens; freezers, coolers and a distribution warehouse as well as a store front. We will distribute our products weekly to distribution centers along the I5 corridor from Sacramento to Portland.
Using a co-operative organization of family farms and ranches, we will be able to provide products for many more families and individuals and at a reasonable price that will be paid directly to the farmers, not mega businesses.
